UPDATE (8-3-07): Now Includes 8600GTS SLI vs. 8800GTS 640 (below)
There's been a lot of confusion around here as to whether or not the 8600GT or 8600GTS are very good performers when it comes to gaming. I really wasn't sure so decided to compile some benchmarks from review sites on the net. I thought this may help people looking into purchasing an 8600 series video card.
I've included the 3DMark06 benchmark (stock) graph for each site's review, and the links:
TechSpot: Nvidia 8600GTS & GT Performance:
Legit Reviews: XFX 8600 GT & 8600 GTS XXX Edition Video Cards:
FiringSquad: NVIDIA 8600GTS/GT Performance Review:
The Tech Report: Nvidia's GeForce 8600 series graphic cards:
It seems the 8600 series performs quite well, with both beating out the 7900GS and X1950Pro in the majority of the cases (in the reviews they appeared), even in the majority of games tested as well.
Keep in mind two of the reviews were with XFX's "XXX" edition with higher clocks than the standard - but these cards have come to be known as great overclockers, and could very likely reach those clocks with ATItool or Rivatuner.

EDIT:
I found this review at Digital-Daily.com:
I know some of you have been looking for a comparison like this...
Digital Daily: 8600GTS SLI versus 8800GTS 640mb
3DMark Scores:
I was intrigued when I saw that the performance was comparable in most of the other games/benchmarks, too. And that's pitted against the 640mb 8800GTS!

While I knew the 8600 series was respectable, the benchmarks kind of surprised me - considering the 8600 series cards use the older 128-bit memory bandwidth. But they are what they are....
I hope all this helps with any purchase decisions out there. Remember that no review is the "final say", but these benchmarks say a lot IMO.
