Two color options, a complete redesign, and new features
The Galaxy SmartTag 2 will go on sale globally on October 11 for $29.99.
Unlike the original
SmartTag, which had a UWB-enabled SmartTag+ counterpart, the new model combines Bluetooth and UWB into one. A Plus version is no longer needed for this generation because the SmartTag 2 is better than the original SmartTag and SmartTag+ combined
The new Galaxy SmartTag 2 has an IP67 rating
The 2021 SmartTag had an IP53 dust and water resistance rating. Technically speaking, an IP53 rating provides limited protection for dust ingress, in addition to protection against water sprays less than 60 degrees from vertical, and limited ingress protection for three minutes.
Galaxy SmartTag 2 offers up to 700 days of location tracking
Samsung has introduced a new Power Saving Mode to its SmartTag 2, designed for users who need to track items continually and hope for low energy consumption.
The company says that the Galaxy SmartTag 2 can last up to 700 days in Power Saving Mode, more than doubling and quadrupling the autonomy of the original Bluetooth and UWB models.
Even in Normal Mode, i.e., when Power Saving Mode is disabled, the Galaxy SmartTag 2 can last up to 500 days on a new charge. That is a huge quality-of-life improvement for Galaxy SmartTag 2 buyers, and these advancements can potentially reduce waste.
One addition to the SmartTag 2 is Lost Mode, which can be very useful for pet owners.
Anyone with an NFC-capable phone can access this information
Through the new Lost Mode, Galaxy SmartTag 2 users can input their contact information by embedding a message. The feature is analogous to a digital version of a pet ID medallion.
The embedded message can be read through a web browser by anyone with a mobile device capable of NFC connectivity. It doesn't have to be a Samsung phone or one with access to the SmartThings app. Other people can scan the SmartTag 2 via NFC and reveal the personal information you decided to share.
As such, in addition to the SmartTag 2 offering owners precise location tracking via UWB, other people can now access this embedded message, read the owner's contact information, and help them find their lost pets or belongings.
