PS3: More Details emerge in print

Quote:

"The folks over at Sony managed to get out some more details about the PS3 in the upcoming issue of PSM Magazine, so without any further ado, here are the goods.

No more memory cards. You know all that stuff about backwards compatibility with the PS2 and the original Playstation? Well, we've got good news and bad news for you. Your old save games won't be usable, thanks to the PS3's reliance on the Memory Stick Duo for storing save data. The good news is that downloading and saving shares via your PC (ahem, ahem) for all three Playstation versions and the PSP will be easy as pie. And we like pie.

Say bye-bye to peripherals. No more using knockoff DDR pads and wireless controllers, gang. Sony has officially disavowed support for all third-party controllers, but you'll still be able to play PS1/PS2 games just fine with a PS3 pad. My money's on a USB adapter coming out for it soon after release, though.

Specs? Um, what specs? Sure, Kutaragi might be singing "The best is yet to come, and babe, won't it be fine?" but he's a little off-key. All those impressive tech specs revealed at E3 weren't the be-all, end-all of the story. Engineers have begun talking about improvements to the system, including low-level memory upgrades and other things that make game developers all hot and bothered.

That hard drive isn't for games. No such luck in getting your save games for Avalon or Dark Sector onto the PS3's micro HDD; Sony wants you to use it for things like downloaded video content, MP3s, and photos. The network hub capabilities will then let you access it from any network-enabled device.

Use your PSP as a remote. Ever wish you could just power on your PlayStation from the couch? Well, grab a PSP and you'll be able to access the PS3 even in sleep mode. Couch potatotes, rejoice!

It will have TiVo-like capabilities. Sure, Sony, you might have told me sweet nothings about a USB video input box that will allow the PS3 to record movies and TV to the micro HDD, and you got me so worked up when you whispered to me about being able to download the shows I've missed from my PS3 to my PSP over the Internet, but I think I'll stick with DirecTiVo, thank you ver much.

Most games will be 720p. Yes, you'll still have 1080i and 1080p high-definition modes, but you can put off that HDTV purchase a little while longer with the news that most game developers are using 720p as the standard target resolution. Good thing, too; have you priced an HDTV-ready plasma recently? (Edit: tanjou's been good enough to point out that all you folks with EDTV won't get any 720p loving.)

Speed or quality, but not both. PC gamers have it so good. Battlefield 2 not running so well? Play it at a lower resolution and watch the game speed up. Sony wants to have games run faster and smoother by dropping the resolution, but it remains to be seen whether game developers will let us have that choice.

The September issue of PSM Magazine will be available at a newsstand near you in a few weeks."

Final Fantasy VII for PS3 May Become Reality

After making the E3 Final Fantasy tech demo a central part of the trailer compilation shown at this year's Square-Enix Party in Japan, the talk has heated up that Square may be pursuing a remake of the legendary title for the PS3.

What may have begun simply as a means to demonstrate the power of Sony's upcoming PLAYSTATION 3 console at the E3 industry show earlier this year seems to have been picking up steam within Square as a project they might wish to pursue. Though Square representatives have claimed that the demo was created for technical demonstration reasons alone, they have not ruled out the creation of additional content based on the Final Fantasy VII storyline. They have also admitted to being pleasantly surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reactions of fans.

Such a remake could be a strong win-win situation for both Square-Enix and Sony, assuming the game would be a Playstation exclusive. Final Fantasy VII is widely attributed as being the game most responsible for setting in motion the original Playstation's march to the title of #1 console, and with the story and plot already in place, development would be eased for Square-Enix. The nostalgia factor alone would likely ensure that the game becomes one of the best-selling titles of the generation.

For those who have not yet had the chance to view the Final Fantasy tech demo, it may be viewed in all it's glory here.

Cell 2.0

Unconfirmed reports make War Hawk seem like one seriously amazing flight action game.
by Ivan Sulic

August 1, 2005 - At press time, we have not been able to officially confirm with Sony whether any of the following is true. Please note that calls have been placed, however. With that in mind, here's our disclaimer: The below information is unsubstantiated report. Consume it at your own risk.

In a nutshell, an anonymous source close to the Salt Lake City developers at Incognito Inc. suggests that Warhawk PS3 could be the definitive flight action game of our time. And here's exactly why...

The unconfirmed report starts off simply enough. "Warhawk is really awesome," says the bold tipster. As the story goes on, we learn that the game has recently been switched to run on "Stage-2" development kits, which suggests something more akin to real world PS3 technology than what was previously revealed at E3.

This has apparently helped Incog get the new flight engine up and running. The informant states that the underlying technology allows the game to feature upwards of "2,000 enemies on-screen at once." While this number may seem impossible, try to recall the vast amount of individual entities present in Capcom's Dead Rising, Microsoft's Kameo, Q Entertainment's Ninety Nine Nights, and Factor 5's Lair -- not to mention Incog's older E3 trailer. Consider those, then doubt. Hell, just play Rome: Total War!

In addition to raw quantity, the Incog spy says Warhawk will feel killer, too: "Most people describe it as Halo meets Star Wars meets Crimson Skies." Fans of flight action will hope that means Tie Fighter plus Zipper's Crimson Skies on PC, but it could just relate the style and feel Incog is shooting for, since the source goes on to note that it's retro like CS, though not quite so much.

But what's up with the Halo nod? Well, gamers who caught our PS3 coverage will have surely noticed the incredible soldiers present at the beginning of the Warhawk demonstration. [LINK]

It seems unlikely that Incog would go through such trouble to meticulously render ground-based models that would only get seen from an altitude of 7,000 feet and a speed of 500 miles per hour. So according to the rumor, those characters are actually part of an extensive on-foot component. We're taking the Halo mention as a "tell" and assuming it's going to be first-person. It's also said that the game is squad-based. If that applies to both aerial combat and land action is not yet clear.

Let's recap! 2,000 enemies on-screen. Check. Flight action. Check. On-foot action. Check. A combination of Halo, Crimson Skies, and Star Wars... Oh my sweet goodness.

The leak also indicates that Warhawk is tentatively scheduled to ship next fall or at least sometime before the Christmas of 2006. Sony is also purportedly shooting for a Teen rating with this one.

We'll be back with more Warhawk information if and when it becomes available. Of course, as soon as we hear from Sony, we'll update you with that official word.

PS3 to come with faster Blu Ray drive

Sony's PlayStation 3 may be equipped with faster than expected Blu-ray drives at launch, as it has emerged that a speedier format will be available before the next generation machine is ready for retail.

The PlayStation 3 was originally mooted to launch with a single (1X, 36Mbit per second) speed drive to run its optical media. But with the arrival of 2X (72Mbps) drives this autumn, it's hoped that by the time PS3 launches in Japan in spring 2006, faster formats will be readily available, with potential for the multimedia machine to run up to 4X, costs permitting.

Sony has yet to confirm the speed of the drive used for PS3, and its specification is open to change over the next few months - but given that some first generation Blu-ray drives are 2X, it's quite possible that will be the minimum Sony will aim for.

For its part, Microsoft has elected to stick with the existing DVD standard in Xbox 360 - although comments from Bill Gates back at the end of June suggested that the company might be considering a move to HD-DVD, a Toshiba-backed rival format to Blu-Ray, at some point in the lifespan of the console.

PS3 To Support MAC OS X Tiger

Description
A recent posting on the official UK Sony website has a lot of fans of console gaming drooling at the prospect of running MAC OS X Tiger on their PS3.
Sony's next-generation console, expected to launch in the spring of 2006, will feature the Cell processor, co-developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM. The company has already claimed that the Cell will be able to support multiple operating systems although it was never made clear how such support may be implemented through the Playstation 3 console.

The account on the UK Sony website, claims: Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PS3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB. It remains to be decided whether the standard version of the PS3 will come complete with a hard drive. The operating system has also yet to be clarified. The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger). That final, inconspicuous looking, statement is what has caused all the excitement. The fact that IBM has been involved in Apple systems for a few years now also lends support to the arguments for OS X Tiger on PS3 as well as Apple's desire to get some form of foothold on the gaming market.

The fact however, that Intel is now taking over from IBM as processor supplier for the company's personal computers may strain any possible partnership although Sony may be willing to work on this partnership as it may help the Japanese giant hit Microsoft where it hurts; on its plans of world domination.

É-me cagativo, quero é ferramentas Audio/video para explorar o bixo...
